The Power Five college football conferences amassed a staggering $3.3 billion in 2022, surpassing the combined earnings of college basketball and baseball. One of the biggest days on the football calendar is National Signing Day where every year, thousands of high school football players choose where they want to continue their athletic careers. In recognition of this, Michael Mosley, Rob Morgan, and Mira Sorvino have teamed up with director Glen Owen to film Signing Day.
The dramatic comedy centers on Walt McFadden, a dedicated football coach looking to recruit Tony Raymond, the No. 1 defensive end in the country. McFadden takes a trip to a small Alabama town in the hopes of securing a commitment amid a swarm of competing recruiters. Along the way, he becomes entangled with Tony’s fractured family, leading to a series of laughable mishaps along the way.
“I didn’t set out to write an expose. I simply wanted to create a film that takes a humorous, but clear-eyed look at what’s happening today on the college football recruiting trail,” explained Owen. “The coach in Signing Day is prepared to do whatever it takes to sign the star player but starts to realize that the “big-time” isn’t necessarily what it’s cracked up to be.”
Filming began on December 4, 2023 in Covington, Georgia, and future Hall-of-Famer Marshawn Lynch has joined the cast alongside current Hall-of-Famer Brian Bosworth.
Glenn Owen, joined by Don Mandrik from Georgia Production Finance, is producing the upcoming flick through Georgia’s State Line Films. This feature film is not only locally produced but also fully-financed from a Georgia-based investors group, including former Dawg and NFL Hall of Famer Champ Bailey as well as Tiffany FitzHenry.
