Oprah will be returning to scripted television this May in her ‘OWN’ Network’s megachurch drama ‘Greenleaf’ filmed here in Georgia.
According to Variety, ‘Greenleaf ‘ centers around Grace Greenleaf (Merle Dandridge) who has returned home after her sister mysteriously dies. It has been 20 years since she has been home with her righteous family, but she learns that her family’s ‘holier-than-thou’ facade hides much more than just a little family drama.
Winfrey will be playing Grace’s Aunt Mavis who is no longer close to Grace’s parents (Keith David and Lynn Whitfield), but seemingly remains in Grace’s best interest. Mavis drops some hard-hitting information about Grace’s Uncle Mac (Gregory Alan Williams) and later it becomes apparent that Mavis has ulterior motives upon Grace’s return.
Lionsgate Television and executive producers Oprah Winfrey, Craig Wright, and Clement Virgo should have high hopes for the series after 2015 proved to be s successful year for ‘OWN.’ Not only did ‘OWN’ extend its 4th year of consecutive growth, but it also saw an increase in the targeted demographic of women ages 25-54.
Executive producer Craig Wright is an award-winning writer/producer for the well-known series ‘Lost’ and ‘Six Feet Under.’
The series is set to premiere with a two-night debut on Tuesday, May 24 and Wednesday, May 25 at 10pm. After the premiere the show will continue on Wednesday nights at 10pm for the remaining 13 episodes.
