Eastwood’s film The Mule has been filming in Georgia

Clint Eastwood’s new film, The Mule, films in Georgia all this month, and just wrapped up filming in Augusta to move to Atlanta. The film crew was spotted shooting scenes at Advent Bethlehem Church and Shaw’s Sunshine Gardens early last week in Augusta. The director of the Augusta Film Office, Brad Owens, says the movie likely has a budget of $20-25 million, which should have a great economic impact on the town. “It is absolutely the largest feature film that’s been shot in Augusta, ever,” Owens continues. “They love our town; they love the fact that they can do two to three moves a day here. We’ve got great locations, we’re almost a completely un-shot town, and so that means our locations are the most valuable thing we have to offer to any production.”

Nancy Glaser, the executive director of the Augusta Museum of History, got to meet Eastwood and Dianne Wiest during filming at their location. “He’s very approachable, very friendly, very curious, very knowledgeable,” Glaser says of Eastwood. “I’m on the Convention and Visitors Bureau Board, and one of the things we want to do is get more films produced and directed here. That was my goal: just to make it easier for the companies. Whether it’s television or movie companies, we want to make it as comfortable for them to come here as possible.”

The production has now moved to Atlanta for more filming, and you may be able to spot stars such as Bradley Cooper, Laurence Fishburne and Michael Pena, who each have roles in the film. The movie is based on a feature article from the New York Times Magazine about Leo Sharp, an elderly drug mule for a Mexican Cartel. Eastwood is both directing and starring.
