Baby Driver Chose I-85 Over Green Screens

The Atlanta-filmed Baby Driver elected to shoot real chase scenes instead of using a green screen, and chose a portion of Interstate 85 for the shooting.

Director Edgar Wright prefers this filming process and noted that many other films lose that sense of realness when using green screens.

“Not mentioning any names of any current, big car-chase movies, but a lot of those actor shots are on green screens,” said Wright, “Those guys are nowhere near the action — usually that’s on a practical level. They might be shooting in Atlanta and other people are in Iceland or something. Again, not mentioning any names. But we shot all of the actor shots for real on the freeways.”

Many claim he is poking fun at the Fast & Furious franchise, also filmed in Atlanta. Their production team was said to shoot their big chase scenes in Iceland. The stars of Baby Driver such as Jon Hamm and Ansel Elgort filmed real scenes here on I-85, which Wright hopes will bring realism to the film.

Baby Driver is about a young getaway driver and his involvement in a heist after he is coerced to work for a crime boss; it is set to premiere June 28.
