Out On Film, Atlanta’s LGBTQ film festival, will honor actor and producer Wilson Cruz with its Trailblazer Award after a special virtual screening of a powerful episode of Apple’s critically acclaimed series “Visible: Out On Television”

The five-part documentary is now streaming globally on Apple TV+ and explores the history of the American LGBTQ movement through the lens of television. The series combines archival footage and new interviews to look at homophobia, the evolution of LGBTQ characters on television and what it means to come out in the television world. On June 16, Out On Film will screen the third episode, “The Epidemic,” which takes a look at how the HIV/AIDS crisis was ignored by television.

Cruz first gained acclaim on the popular show “My So-Called Life,” where he played Enrique “Rickie” Vasquez. By playing Rickie, he became the first openly gay actor to play an openly gay character in a leading role on American television. He was later seen in the landmark LGBTQ series “Noah’s Arc,” and has held recurring roles in “Party of Five” and “13 Reasons Why.” He currently stars as Dr. Hugh Culber in “Star Trek: Discovery,” where he and co-star Anthony Rapp have become the first two gay characters in the franchise’s history. Cruz is also part of the ensemble cast in the animated series “The Bravest Knight.”
