A New York post production studio is expanding into Atlanta for the first time.
Uppercut, based in the Chelsea area of Manhattan, is moving into a new adaptive reuse project in Atlanta’s Upper Westside district. It will occupy just under 10,000 square feet in the first phase of The Works, an 80-acre industrial site along Chattahoochee Avenue that is being transformed into a mixed-use project for makers, new businesses, shops and restaurants.
The $200 million first phase of the project is well underway.
Atlanta real estate company Selig Enterprises owns the development.
Uppercut will move into 1255 Makers Way, a 65-year-old former warehouse that is being redeveloped into 47,000 square feet of modern office space.
Founded in 2015 by Micah Scarpelli, Uppercut is a post-production studio with prominent retail clients, including Nike, Toyota, Volvo and Johnson & Johnson. It’s the studio’s first foray into Georgia. It also has offices in Boston.
Meanwhile, Selig Enterprises has also signed another new tenant at 1255 Makers Way. Conisus, an Atlanta-based company within the city’s biopharmaceutical industry, will occupy just over 14,000 square feet.
Conisus subsidiary S Phase will be the main occupant of this space, while its other subsidiaries, Envision Communications, E Squared Communications, and Vereo Communications, will also have a presence.
Both Uppercut and Conisus plan to open their offices in early 2020.
The new tenants bring 1255 Makers Way to 50% leased. Malloy Peterson, a senior leader with Selig Enterprises, said the first phase of The Works continues to gain momentum. The project includes the renovation of 27 acres of warehouses, comprising 485,000 square feet of retail and office space.
Work continues on the infrastructure, including new interior roads and a 1-acre park, Peterson said.
The Works is one of the largest in an array of new projects on the Upper Westside, a rapidly changing industrial area and group of neighborhoods on the city’s northwest side, stretching from Moore’s Mill to Huff Road.
The Upper Westside is already home to a cluster of breweries, including Scofflaw Brewing Co., which has leased about 11,000 square feet at The Works. Chef Andrew Zimmern, whose work includes the Travel Channel’s “Bizarre Foods” franchise and Food Network’s “Big Food Truck Tip,” will also help lead the creation of a 16,000-square-foot food hall at The Works.
