Atlanta-made Hidden Figures grabbed three nominations for the 89th Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Supporting Actress (Octavia Spencer), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
Hidden Figures already received two Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress (Spencer) and Best Original Score. Currently grossing $84 million, it was chosen by National Board of Review as one of the top ten films of 2016.
While set in Hampton, Va., Hidden Figures was filmed around metro Atlanta, including locations such as downtown Canton, Monroe, East Point, and the Morehouse College campus.
While Hidden Figures took high nominations, other productions filmed in Atlanta grabbed awards as well: the Clint Eastwood film Sully, starring Tom Hanks and filmed partially in Atlanta and Alpharetta, earned a nomination for Best Sound Editing; the Jennifer Lawrence/Chris Pratt sci-fi romance Passengers, filmed at EUE/Screen Gems and Pinewood Studios, snagged nominations for Best Production Design and Best Original Score.
The Oscars will air on February 26. A full list of nominees can be found on the official Academy Awards website.
